Burial Benefits and Memorial Items for Veterans

Veterans can receive military funeral honors and memorial items whether they’re interred in a veteran’s cemetery or a private one. If you’re a veteran and your discharge was not dishonorable, you can probably be buried in a national veteran’s cemetery.
Veterans may receive military funeral honors at no cost. They are also usually eligible for free memorial items including:
  • Grave site at a National Cemetery
  • Opening and closing of the grave
  • Perpetual care
  • Headstones, markers, and medallions
  • Burial flag
  • Presidential Memorial Certificate
What is a DD form 214
Fouché’s counselors must receive the decedent’s DD form 214 for him/her to secure a burial flag, order available buglers to play Taps and schedule a burial date in a local National Cemetery.

The DD Form 214 is a complete and thorough document that verifies a service member's proof of military service. This Certificate of Release or Discharge form is issued through the Department of Defense and is typically issued at the final out processing appointment prior to retirement or separation.
